This is an important story. It shows how solar microgrids in developing countries can bypass the power grid just as cell phones have turned landlines into last century's technology. This major blackout of electriciy in India last month was caused by government corruption, but it did not effect villagers who depended on their local microgrid. There are important lessons here for all of us. I have lived off-grid for 22 years now in Oregon. I always get a chuckle when I call someone in town and they tell me that the power is off. My lights never go out unless I am doing some maintenance on my system, about once every 5 years.
Indian blackout held no fear for small hamlet where the power stayed on
In rural Rajasthan, Gram Power's solar-powered microgrid kept the lights working and the buttermilk churning
